Brooks has the highest proportion of Black Canadians of any census tract in Canada, as well as a strong immigrant labour force due to their meat packing industry.
Student leaders at Brooks Composite High School have made leaps in improving racial equity at their school and in their broader community, such as making Eid al-Fitr a recognized school holiday.
The Brooks students were 1 of 2 Canadian teams invited to present at “Activism and Advocacy During Troubled Times: A Roadmap for Improved Practices Among Newcomer Youth” at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Chicago.
